The United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Human Development Report 2023/24, titled “Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World,” examines the challenges arising from uneven development progress, growing inequalities, and increasing political polarization. The report emphasizes the need for reimagined cooperation and effective multilateralism to address these issues.
A key finding of the report is the disparity in human development recovery post-crisis: while wealthier nations have surpassed their pre-crisis Human Development Index (HDI) levels, many of the poorest countries continue to struggle. Specifically, all member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have exceeded their 2019 HDI levels, whereas only about half of the least developed countries have recovered to their pre-crisis standings.
The report underscores the urgency of fostering global cooperation to overcome these challenges and achieve sustainable development goals.
